'Thappad' off to a slow start, collects Rs. 3 crore
Taapsee Pannu's latest movie Thappad has impressed one and all with its sensitive subject matter and mature treatment. In fact, the movie has received glowing reviews from critics and the audience alike. However, as is the case with most socially relevant movies in India, it struggled to gather masses and minted merely Rs. 3.07 crore on day one. Here are more details on this.
'Thappad' expected to record a decent opening weekend collection
Reportedly, Thappad had a low occupancy in morning shows but witnessed growth in the evening and night shows. While the movie could collect just Rs. 3.07 crore on Friday, positive word-of-mouth publicity might improve its box office numbers over the weekend. Notably, Thappad marks the second collaboration between writer/director Anubhav Sinha and Taapsee, after the widely acclaimed 2018 drama Mulk.
'Thappad' raises pertinent issues of patriarchy and misogyny
Co-written by Sinha and Mrunmayee Lagoo, Thappad tells the story of Amrita (Taapsee), a housewife and a loving partner, who decides to fight back after her husband slaps her at a party. The movie is being hailed for its tight-knit screenplay and spot-on performances by the supporting cast. It impressed everyone by raising pertinent issues of ingrained patriarchy and misogyny in our society.
We gave 'Thappad' 3.5 out of 5 stars
In our review, we gave Thappad 3.5 out of 5 stars while writing, "Thappad is not just about one thoughtless slap, it's about all the prejudice and injustice that exist in lopsided relationships and marriages, all around us. It is well-intended, powerful and relevant."
'Thappad' is competing with 'Shubh Mangal', 'Bhoot' at box office
At the box office, Thappad is competing with movies such as Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and Bhoot: The Haunted Ship, both of which released last week. While Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar-starrer Shubh Mangal has so far minted Rs. 46 crore, Vicky Kaushal's first-ever horror flick Bhoot has collected just around Rs. 24 crore by end of its first week.
