Box office: 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan' edges toward ₹25cr
With anticipation at a fever pitch, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan—starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff—made a thunderous entrance at the box office on Thursday. It raked in a staggering ₹15.65cr on its opening day, setting the stage for a potentially lucrative weekend. However, surprisingly, BMCM experienced a sharp decline on day 2, with revenue plummeting by a shocking 55%. Here's a breakdown of the collections.
Why does this story matter?
Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, BMCM was marketed as a high-budget spectacle featuring thrilling stunts by the lead actors. Despite its holiday release and initial hopes of a surge over the extended weekend, the film has not met expectations. The movie is up against Ajay Devgn's sports drama Maidaan, which had a slow start at the box office. On its opening day, Maidaan earned only ₹7.1cr and collected just ₹2.75cr on its second day, way behind BMCM.
'BMCM' inches closer to ₹25cr
As per Sacnilk, the mass entertainer notched an estimated ₹7cr on Friday, pushing its domestic total to ₹22.65cr. With an overall Hindi occupancy rate of 15.54%, the film witnessed its highest turnout during night shows at 20.00%. Interestingly, the reception in Tamil surpassed that in Hindi, with a robust 20.95% Tamil occupancy. BMCM has seen a multilingual release, hitting screens in Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada alongside Tamil and Hindi. The movie also stars Sonakshi Sinha, Manushi Chhillar, and Prithviraj Sukumaran.
'BMCM' has failed to woo critics
Backed by Jackky Bhagnani's Pooja Entertainment, the film centers on the dynamic duo of Captain Firoz (Bade Miyan) and Captain Rakesh (Chote Miyan), who find themselves pitted against a nefarious scientist-entrepreneur portrayed by Sukumaran. It is important to note that the film received mixed to negative reviews, with criticism aimed toward its uninventive, stereotypical storyline, and predictable twists. In comparison, Maidaan received mostly positive reviews.
Kumar's recent filmography shows underperforming movies
Kumar's recent filmography includes several underperforming movies including Samrat Prithviraj, Ram Setu, Bachchhan Paandey, and Raksha Bandhan. Interestingly, Samrat Prithviraj, one of Kumar's biggest duds of 2023 due to its high budget, had a better opening than BMCM. It earned ₹23.3cr in India during its first two days and concluded its box office journey with ₹68.05cr. Now, all eyes are on whether BMCM will finally break Kumar's streak of box office misfortune.
