SRK-Ajay-Tiger summoned by consumer forum over pan masala ad
What's the story
The Jaipur consumer forum has summoned actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff, along with the chairman of JB Industries, for allegedly endorsing a misleading advertisement for Vimal Pan Masala, reported TOI.
The advertisement in question falsely claims that every grain of their pan masala contains saffron, something that's highly unlikely given its cost.
The forum is set to hear the case on March 19.
Complaint details
Complaint filed by Jaipur resident Yogendra Singh Badiyal
Commission chairman Gyarsilal Meena and member Hemlata Agarwal passed the order after Jaipur resident Yogendra Singh Badiyal complained against the company's advertisement.
Badiyal argued that JB Industries, the manufacturer of the Vimal Pan Masala brand, falsely advertised its product as containing saffron to boost sales.
He pointed out that saffron costs around ₹4 lakh per kg while their pan masala is priced at just ₹5.
Allegations
Actors accused of spreading false propaganda
Badiyal accused the actors of endorsing a product that deceives customers into thinking it has saffron in it.
He said, "The three actors, including Shahrukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff, advertise it to increase its sales."
"However, the truth is that the price of saffron is around ₹4 lakh per kg and their Pan Masala with Tobacco pouch comes in at ₹5. In such a situation, forget about adding saffron, even its fragrance cannot be added to it."
Health concerns
Health risks and demand for advertisement ban
The complainant also emphasized the health risks of consuming pan masala and tobacco, popularly known as gutkha, which is injurious and fatal.
He accused the company of deceiving consumers by falsely advertising that their product contains saffron.
"In such a situation, its advertisement should be banned," said Badiyal.
