Bollywood needs internal review board for harassment claims, says Bahl
In a recent interview, Section 375 director Ajay Bahl emphasized the need for internal review committees in the Hindi film industry to address sexual harassment. He drew inspiration from the Hema Committee's findings in the Malayalam film industry. Bahl also stressed that such committees should ensure complainants' professional safety and career prospects are not compromised when they report incidents of sexual harassment.
Bahl advocates for complainants' protection
Bahl highlighted the importance of confidentiality and support systems to protect complainants while speaking to Zoom. He suggested that any behavior deemed criminal by the committee should be reported immediately, rather than years later when survivors are likely to face denial or skepticism. This approach, he believes, would deter potential abusers by instilling fear of public shaming. Bahl's call for reform extends to all Indian film industries.
Shraddha Srinath echoes Bahl's sentiments
Actor Shraddha Srinath, during her speech at the India Today Mind Rocks Youth Summit 2024, also underscored the need for better support systems for women facing sexual harassment in the film industry. She advocated for a structured body to improve working conditions and ensure proper sanitation facilities on sets. Her views align with Bahl's call for industry-wide reform to address sexual harassment.
Tamil film industry has established new panel, too
In the Tamil film industry, a similar committee has been established this month, chaired by actor Rohini. The committee will provide legal support and forward cases to cyber police. Offenders found guilty will face a five-year industry ban. Actor Vishal, the secretary of Nadigar Sangam, has encouraged women to speak out against sexual harassment without fear of losing their jobs.
Vishal urges Bollywood to address sexual harassment issue
Vishal expressed concern over Bollywood's silence on the issue of sexual harassment. He encouraged women to come forward and reveal the truth. His comments highlight the need for the Hindi film industry to establish similar committees and support systems to address sexual harassment, echoing Bahl's call for industry-wide reform.
