Bharatanatyam doyen Yamini Krishnamurthy (84) dies after prolonged illness
Yamini Krishnamurthy, a celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer and recipient of the prestigious Padma awards, passed away on Saturday at the age of 84, reported PTI. She had been admitted to Apollo Hospital in New Delhi. Her manager and secretary, Ganesh, confirmed her passing stating, "She was suffering from age-related issues and was in the ICU for the last seven months." May she rest in peace.
Apollo Hospital expresses condolences over Krishnamurthy's death
Apollo Hospital issued a statement expressing their condolences. The hospital stated, "Padma Vibhushan Dr Yamini Krishnamurthi was admitted to the Apollo Hospital with a long-standing history of multiple medical issues. Despite the team's best efforts, Dr Krishnamurthi passed away this afternoon. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Krishnamurthi." Her mortal remains will be brought to her institute, Yamini School of Dance, on Sunday at 9 am. She's survived by two sisters.

Krishnamurthy was a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, known for her mastery of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dance forms. Her performances were celebrated for their technical precision, expressive depth, and cultural richness. This made her an iconic ambassador of Indian classical dance on the global stage. Over her sprawling, illustrious career, she received numerous awards including the Padma Shri in 1968, Padma Bhushan in 2001, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2016.
