Beyoncé surpasses husband Jay-Z in lifetime Grammy nominations
Beyoncé has made history by beating her husband, Jay-Z, in all-time Grammy nominations. The 43-year-old singer bagged 11 nods for the upcoming 2025 ceremony, taking her lifetime tally to an impressive 99. This puts her ahead of Jay-Z, who has 88 nominations (24 wins) to his name. Among Beyonce's nominations is an Album Of The Year nod for Cowboy Carter—her first foray into country music.
'Cowboy Carter' breaks record, dominates Grammy nominations
Along with its Album Of The Year nomination, Cowboy Carter has also been nominated in the country and Americana categories. This is the first time Beyoncé has been nominated in these genres. Her single from the album, Texas Hold 'Em, has been nominated for record and song of the year. With these 11 nods, Cowboy Carter has become the most Grammy-nominated album of all time.
Beyoncé could make history with Album of the Year win
Despite being the most-awarded artist in Grammy history with 32 trophies, Beyoncé has never won the album trophy. If she wins for Cowboy Carter, she will be the first Black woman to do so in the 21st century. The last Black woman to achieve the feat was Lauryn Hill in 1999 for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Notably, critics and fans alike have hailed Cowboy Carter as a tribute to the often-overlooked legacy of Black Americans in country music.
'Cowboy Carter' to compete with albums by Taylor, Sabrina, Billie
In the Album Of The Year category, Cowboy Carter faces Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department, Sabrina Carpenter's Short n' Sweet, Charli XCX's Brat, Billie Eilish's Hit Me Hard and Soft, and Chappell Roan's The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The only two male artists nominated in this category are rapper Andre 3000 with New Blue Sun and jazz artist Jacob Collier for Djesse Vol. 4.
Jay-Z criticized Grammys for Beyoncé's Album of the Year snub
Earlier this year, Jay-Z criticized Grammy voters for Beyoncé's lack of recognition in the top category while accepting a lifetime achievement award. Addressing the audience, he said, "I don't want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won album of the year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn't work. Think about that. The most Grammys; never won album of the year."
