CW orders pilot episode for 'Batwoman' starring Ruby Rose
There is a new superhero coming to our television screens and she is as mean as she is progressive. Yes, CW has just agreed to a standalone Batwoman series, and even ordered the pilot of the show yesterday. The protagonist will be played by Ruby Rose, who's famous for her role in Orange Is the New Black and John Wick: Chapter 2.
Meet the people making the show
The pilot is being penned by Caroline Dries, who worked on Vampire Diaries. Greg Berlanti is the executive producer and the director is David Nutter, who has previously directed pilots for other popular CW shows like Arrow and The Flash.
The new savior of Gotham has her own demons
Batwoman will follow the titular superhero, Kate Kane, who has a passion for social justice and speaks her mind. She is described as being a lesbian and is an extremely skilled street fighter. Although well equipped to fight crime in Gotham, she cannot become Gotham's hero and the city's symbol of hope until she manages to face and overcome her own demons.
A pathbreaking hero is coming to our screens
For those unaware, Batwoman could be a potentially pathbreaking comic character on television. Not only is this the first time a superhero series has an openly gay character as the protagonist, but she is also played by Ruby, an actress who is herself gender-fluid.
Before solo series, Batwoman appeared in crossover
Batwoman might have appeared first in comics in 1956, but she only showed up on the TV screens a few weeks back. The character first appeared as part of a series of crossover episodes starring other notable CW heroes like Supergirl, Flash and Green Arrow. It was a test to see how the character performed a few weeks ahead of getting a standalone show.
