'Bareilly Ki Barfi' sequel happening? Director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari responds
What's the story
Bareilly Ki Barfi, starring Kriti Sanon, Rajkummar Rao, and Ayushmann Khurrana in lead roles, was re-released in theaters on Friday (February 7).
In a recent interview with Zoom, acclaimed director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari finally addressed the speculation of a sequel to her popular 2017 romantic drama.
Despite its undying popularity over the last eight years, Iyer Tiwari was skeptical about a follow-up to the beloved Bollywood classic.
Sequel skepticism
Iyer Tiwari expressed concerns about creating a sequel
Notably, Iyer Tiwari isn't a huge fan of sequels.
She said that the story of Bitti (Sanon), Chirag (Khurrana), and Pritam Vidrohi (Rao) cannot be stretched since the real world has changed so much over the years.
Explaining her stance, she said, "I'm not a very big fan of sequels...a sequel has to be so good that it has to be better than your previous one."
Societal evolution
Iyer Tiwari highlighted societal changes as a challenge
The director went on to explain the difficulty of making a sequel, especially with the changes in society since Bareilly Ki Barfi's release.
"Bareilly Ki Barfi happened eight years back. At that time, Lucknow and Bareilly were called midtowns. Now they're cities," she said.
"A lot of things have changed in eight years... So, how then do you connect to your audience while keeping the same sentiment of the film?"
Sequel standards
'Are you making sequels for the heck of it?'
Iyer Tiwari stressed, "Are you making sequels for the heck of making a sequel or you are doing it because you really want to make it and it does make sense?"
Meanwhile, Bareilly Ki Barfi follows Bitti—a free-spirited girl from Bareilly, who finds solace in a novel that mirrors her life. As she searches for its mysterious author, she gets entangled in a love triangle with two men—one who wrote the book and another who claims to be its writer.
