Barack Obama was almost a part of 'Severance 2'
What's the story
In a recent revelation, Ben Stiller—the producer of the popular Apple TV+ series Severance—revealed that former US President Barack Obama was first approached for a voice role in the show's second season.
Stiller made the revelation during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he revealed that he had pitched the part to Obama through an email facilitated by a mutual acquaintance.
Response received
Obama expressed interest but declined due to time constraints
Stiller revealed that he got a reply from Obama within two days of sending the email.
The former President said he loved Severance and was looking forward to its second season. But due to scheduling conflicts, he rejected the offer saying, "I don't think I have time in my schedule to make it happen."
Stiller jokingly asked what could be more important than voicing an animated building in Severance.
Role details
Keanu Reeves eventually voiced the 'Lumon is listening' video
The part that was originally offered to Obama was for the "Lumon is Listening" video seen in Severance. This role was eventually voiced by Hollywood star Keanu Reeves, who has an uncredited voice role in the show.
Stiller lauded Reeves's performance, calling his voice "warm and inviting." He also disclosed that Reeves took the role "very seriously," recording multiple takes of the voice-over in Los Angeles.
Role requirements
'Severance' creator shared insights on the voice role
Previously, Severance creator Dan Erickson had spoken about the voice role with Collider.
He had said that they were looking for a person who could provide a "warm presence" and whose voice would be associated with "friendliness" and "heart."
This description fits perfectly with Stiller's praise for Reeves's performance in the series.
