Hit-and-run case: Court issues bailable warrant against Salman Khan
A Mumbai sessions court has issued a bailable arrest warrant against Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case. The court order comes after Salman did not show up for substitution of a bail surety. His lawyer in February had appealed to the Supreme Court to replace a surety. A surety is a person responsible for supervising an accused who is out on bail.
A police official informed about the development
"The apex court asked the actor to name the new surety before the concerned trial court. Salman's lawyer told the SC that one of the sureties had required discharge and needed to be replaced," a police official said.
Salman didn't show up in court even after two notices
As per another police official, the sessions court had issued two notices to the superstar regarding the surety replacement. The first one was received by his father Salim Khan and the second one by Salman himself. However, Salman and his lawyer still did not appear before the court. Hence, additional session judge MG Deshpande on April 4 issued a bailable arrest warrant against him.
A timeline of the 2002 accident case
Salman has been accused of running his Toyota Land Cruiser over five people sleeping on the pavement. He was said to be in an inebriated state. He was sentenced to five-years in jail by a sessions court in May 2015 but then moved the Bombay High Court and was acquitted by December. At present, the case is due for hearing in the Supreme Court.
