Box office: 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan's collections dwindle further
Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff, is facing a significant slump in its box office collections. Despite its high-profile cast and a reported budget of ₹350cr, the film's earnings have dipped to ₹51.40cr by its second Friday, marking a 21% decline in revenue. This downturn comes as a surprise given that the movie was one of the most anticipated releases of the year.
Why does this story matter?
Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, BMCM initially generated high expectations but ultimately disappointed with a lukewarm opening, solidifying its status as one of Hindi cinema's recent major flops. Apart from Kumar and Shroff, the film also features Prithviraj Sukumaran, Alaya F, Manushi Chhillar, and Sonakshi Sinha. It revolves around elite soldiers uniting to retrieve a stolen weapon from a masked antagonist intent on destroying India.
Initial collections failed to meet expectations
BMCM released last Thursday, coinciding with the Eid holiday, managed to collect a modest ₹15.65cr upon its opening. Despite an extended first week, it failed to cross the ₹50cr benchmark, accumulating only ₹48.20cr by the end of week one. After a promising start with a weekend collection of ₹40cr, weekday earnings plateaued at around ₹2.50cr, further contributing to its underwhelming performance. On Friday, it added an estimated ₹1.50cr and recorded 9.49% Hindi occupancy rates.
Starcast remuneration and future prospects
A significant portion of the film's budget was allocated to the star cast's remuneration, with Kumar receiving around ₹80cr, Shroff getting ₹40cr, and Sukumaran being paid ₹5cr, reportedly. BMCM faces no major competition which could potentially improve its performance. This week's releases—Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2 and Do Aur Do Pyaar—do not pose any significant competition as of yet. However, current trends suggest that it may only amass around ₹60-70cr by the end of its theatrical run.
Audience response and international performance
While its domestic performance has been disappointing, it fared slightly better internationally, earning an estimated ₹27cr at the overseas box office, pushing its worldwide collections to approximately ₹81.4cr. Upon its release, the film received negative to mixed reviews from critics, who criticized its repetitive storyline. Similarly, the online community had mixed reactions, with some praising the performances and stunts while others criticized the lackluster plotline.
