Disney+ Hotstar is set to premiere the new animated series Baahubali: Crown of Blood by acclaimed director SS Rajamouli. The series, inspired by the successful Baahubali film franchise, unveiled its trailer on Thursday and revealed that the show will premiere on May 17. The films, directed by Rajamouli and produced by Arka Mediaworks, were a global sensation from 2015 to 2018. The first is titled Baahubali: The Beginning, while the second is called Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. With a budget of $70M, the films grossed $370M worldwide. The movies, featuring Prabhas and Rana Daggubati, were a pan-Indian hit. It also led to the nationwide popularity of Rajamouli and Prabhas and elevated the career of Sharad Kelkar, who dubbed for Prabhas in Hindi.

New animated series explores untold stories of 'Baahubali' universe
Per Variety, the upcoming series is set before the films and follows Baahubali (Prabhas) and Bhallaladeva (Daggubati) as they unite to defend the kingdom of Mahishmati from a formidable warlord named Raktadeva. This narrative builds upon two seasons of another animated series Baahubali: The Lost Legends, which was released on Amazon Prime Video in 2017 and 2018. Rajamouli expressed his excitement about the new project, stating that it will "reveal many unknown twists in the lives of Baahubali and Bhallaladeva."
Disney+ Hotstar's initiative to expand into adult animation
Baahubali: Crown of Blood is part of Disney+ Hotstar's initiative to delve into adult animation. Devarajan described the series as an animated adventure filled with political intrigue, drama, betrayal, war, heroism, loyalty, and courage. Gaurav Banerjee, head of content at Disney+ Hotstar, emphasized the importance of animation in modern storytelling and their commitment to delivering captivating narratives like Baahubali to their viewers.
