'Avengers: Endgame' to have 3 hours runtime, directors confirm
Avengers: Endgame is one of the most anticipated films in 2019 and when it hits theaters on April 26, it will fruitfully conclude a long phase of Marvel films. The movie will see our heroes recover from the defeat suffered in Avengers: Infinity War and regroup to defeat Thanos. Recently, directors, Anthony and Joe Russo have confirmed the movie's runtime, and it's not unexpected.
Previously they had teased a 3 hour runtime
We had reported when Joe spoke about the film's runtime. He said there was a high probability the film would have an estimated time of 3 hours, making it the longest MCU movie. This is unsurprising since the film ends the current phase of MCU and has to tie up loose ends. Thus, it will be a 'big movie with a lot of story'.
However, we expected a more streamlined movie by now
Despite initial teases about a 3-hour long movie, we had expected the film would get slashed down before hitting theaters. Naturally, the theatrical version would be more streamlined. However, in a recent talk with Collider, the directors confirmed the film still stands at 3 hours.
Despite film still requiring work, studio happy with it
Joe revealed, "I think the studio is down with what the best story is. Right now, we think the movie is playing well and we've had great responses from our test audiences." Admitting there was still work to be done, he stated, the film is a culmination of 22 movies, and telling a complicated, emotional story would require 'a certain amount of real estate'.
With release date nearing, this could be the final runtime
For those unaware, Avengers: Infinity War is MCU's longest film yet, clocking at two hours and 40 minutes. Since Endgame is just a few months away from the release date and the filmmakers are still sticking to the initial runtime, we believe the film will not be suffering any drastic cuts. Even after substantial edits, the runtime for Endgame could still exceed Infinity War.
