How much Robert Downey Jr., others earned from Marvel films?
We can all agree that any actor who lands sizable roles in a Marvel film gets very rich and very famous, very quickly. The multi-billion dollar franchise has boosted many a career (and bank accounts). In Robert Downey Jr.'s case, he has made a little more than a few millions for portraying Iron Man and his Avengers: Endgame paycheck is even bigger. Here are the details.
Here's how much Robert Downey Jr. earned from 'Infinity War'
Iron Man is arguably the most memorable character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it's safe to say that MCU wouldn't be what it is today without the success of the 2008 film Iron Man. A source revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that RDJ walked away with at least $75mn (Rs. 520.89cr) for Avengers: Infinity War, which grossed over $2bn (Rs. 13,890.5cr).
RDJ has a unique deal with Marvel Studios
According to The Hollywood Reporter, RDJ had a unique deal with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, resulting in enormous paydays. Reportedly, RDJ earned $5mn (Rs. 34.72cr) a day for three days' work in the 2017 movie Spider-Man: Homecoming. Basically, he is about to earn even more with the success of Endgame, which has already grossed over $1.3bn (Rs. 9,028cr) since its release last week.
Here's how much the other actors are earning
Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Chris Evans (Captain America) had signed five-picture deals with Marvel, and later re-negotiated when Marvel wouldn't let them go. The actors landed themselves in the $15-20mn (Rs. 104-138cr) brackets. There is also a 2020-standalone Black Widow prequel in the making, produced by and starring Scarlett Johansson, allowing the actress to walk with a paycheck of around $20mn (Rs. 138.90cr).
Marvel raised the bar for star bonuses after 'Iron Man'
However, Marvel has reportedly been changing the rules. After Iron Man grossed $585mn (Rs. 4,062cr) worldwide, Marvel raised the bar for star bonuses. A star would be eligible for a bonus when a film crosses the $500mn (Rs. 3,472cr) globally, which was later raised to $700mn (Rs. 4,861cr), and is currently resting at a whopping $1.5bn (Rs. 10,417cr), after the success of Avengers films.
Here are the other films Marvel is working on
Apart from the Black Widow movie, the MCU is also working on sequels for Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, Thor, and Black Panther; a film based on the Eternals; an Asian-led superhero film Shang-Chi; and a Blade film.
Several MCU actors are trying to negotiate for independent series
Given the success of the films, some MCU actors are looking to cut a deal with the studio for an independent series on Disney+, Disney's streaming service. These actors include Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye). Reportedly, these deals "don't negate appearances in future Marvel movies."
