AR Rahman to compose music for Hansal Mehta's 'Gandhi'
Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has been roped in to create the musical score for the upcoming series Gandhi, helmed by Hansal Mehta and produced by Applause Entertainment. The announcement was made on Wednesday, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti, which marks Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary. The series is based on historian Ramchandra Guha's books Gandhi Before India and Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World, 1914-1948.
'Gandhi' series to explore Mahatma's life and legacy
The first season of Gandhi will dive into the early years of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, from his days as a law student in London to his work as a lawyer and civil rights activist in South Africa. This was when his ideas started taking shape, which eventually led to India's independence from British rule. The following seasons will cover the rest of his life.
'Gandhi' reunites Mehta, Pratik Gandhi, and Applause Entertainment
The series marks a reunion for Applause, director Mehta, and actor Pratik Gandhi (no relation to Mahatma Gandhi) who portrays the titular character. This team previously collaborated on the successful SonyLIV series Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story in 2020. Sameer Nair, managing director of Applause Entertainment, told Variety that Rahman's music will add a "soul-stirring dimension" to this iconic story and resonate with audiences globally.
Rahman and Mehta expressed their excitement for 'Gandhi'
Rahman shared his excitement about the project, saying, "Watching Gandhi-ji's younger life is a revelation—his experiments with truth, life, and so many other things show the evolution of his character. I am deeply honored to be scoring the music for this story." Meanwhile, Mehta expressed his delight at having Rahman on board, highlighting that his music has a unique ability to enhance storytelling and bring out the emotional and spiritual nuances of Gandhi's life.
