Anubhav Sinha didn't want Rajiv Thakur in 'IC 814'—Here's why
Comedian-actor Rajiv Thakur, known for his roles in comedy shows like Comedy Circus and The Kapil Sharma Show, recently made headlines for his portrayal of a terrorist in the controversial Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. However, it wasn't an easy journey for him to bag this role. In a recent interview, he revealed that director Anubhav Sinha was initially upset about his casting and even "scolded" casting director Mukesh Chhabra.
'Why did you have to take Rajiv?'
During a conversation with India Today, Thakur shared that Sinha was initially hesitant about his casting due to his comedic background. The director expressed concerns that audiences might not take Thakur seriously in a terrorist role. "Anubhav sir was upset and even scolded Mukesh bhai. He said, 'Why did you have to take Rajiv,' as he was confused," Thakur told the portal.
'I don't want people to giggle remembering his past work'
Sinha was concerned that Thakur's comedic past might interfere with the serious nature of his role in IC 814. "He did such a good audition but this is a role of a terrorist, I don't want people to giggle remembering his past work," Sinha told Chhabra. However, Chhabra defended his decision by stating that Thakur had successfully passed the audition and deserved a chance.
Thakur's audition and role in 'IC 814'
Thakur auditioned for the role by performing a scene where he instructs the pilot to fly the plane. He initially delivered his lines in a villainous tone but was advised to make it sound more like a natural conversation. Despite believing it was his weakest audition, Thakur was selected for the part of Ibrahim Akhtar alias "Chief." The role has given Thakur a significant career boost, with many viewers discovering him through the series.
'I am not used to receiving so many compliments'
Further, Thakur compared this newfound love to the adoration he received 15 years ago when the Laughter Challenge was launched. Thakur also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming praise he has received since the show's release. "Actors like Kumud Mishra and Divyendu Bhattacharjee, who understand the craft, lauded my work. Gajraj Rao asked me to enjoy the moment," he said. He was particularly touched when Dia Mirza reached out to him on Instagram with a message of appreciation.
