Anne Hathaway to star in Colleen Hoover's 'Verity' adaptation
Oscar-winning actor Anne Hathaway has been tapped to headline the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios feature, Verity. The film is an adaptation of Colleen Hoover's No. 1 New York Times bestseller and will be directed by Michael Showalter. The current script has been written by Nick Antosca, who follows earlier drafts by Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and Will Honley and April Maguire. The film is part of a first-look deal between Semi-Formal Productions and Amazon MGM Studios.
'Verity' plot and production details revealed
Verity follows the story of Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer on the verge of financial ruin, who accepts a job offer from Jeremy Crawford. Crawford's wife, Verity (Hathaway), is a bestselling thriller author who can't finish her successful series after an accident. As Ashleigh uncovers the Crawford family's secrets through an unfinished manuscript, she must decide if Verity's writings are fiction or warnings from a deranged psychopath. The roles of Jeremy and Lowen, are yet to be cast.
'Verity' novel's success and Hoover's winning streak
Hoover's 2018 self-published novel Verity was acquired by Grand Central Publishing in 2021 after it became a phenomenon. The book sold over one million copies in 2023 alone and has been described as a gothic, psychosexual thriller. Another of Hoover's bestsellers, It Ends With Us, was adapted into a film starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni earlier this year, grossing $346 million at the worldwide box office.
Hathaway and Showalter's successful collaborations
This film marks another collaboration between Hathaway, Showalter, and Amazon MGM Studios after their hit romantic comedy The Idea of You. The film garnered nearly 50 million worldwide viewers in its first two weeks on Amazon Prime Video, breaking a new record for Amazon MGM Studios. Hathaway was last seen in Mother's Instinct opposite Jessica Chastain and has several upcoming projects including Mother Mary and Flowervale Street.
