'A milestone': Anne Hathaway celebrates five years of sobriety
Hollywood actor Anne Hathaway recently disclosed that she has been living a sober lifestyle for over five years. In a candid conversation with The New York Times, she discussed her decision to abstain from alcohol until her children, Jonathan (8) and Jack (4)—whom she shares with husband-producer Adam Shulman—reach adulthood. "I don't normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober," Hathaway stated, viewing her sobriety as "a milestone."
Hathaway shared her sobriety journey amid life's uncertainties
When questioned about reaching the age of 40 in 2022, the actor expressed that it wasn't as significant as some might perceive. "The fact of the matter is I hesitate at calling things 'middle age' simply because I can be a semantic stickler and I could get hit by a car later today," she explained. "We don't know if this is middle age. We don't know anything."
First public acknowledgment of quitting alcohol came at this show
Her first public acknowledgment of her decision to abstain from alcohol was during a 2019 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She told the host Ellen DeGeneres, "I quit drinking back in October." "For 18 years, I'm gonna stop drinking while my son's living in my house. I don't totally love the way I [drink] and he's getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings."
Hangovers, not alcohol, prompted Hathaway's sobriety
During DeGeneres's show, Hathaway also recounted a time when she had to perform school drop-off duties while hungover—an experience that led her to reconsider her relationship with alcohol. "I did one school run one day where I dropped him off...I wasn't driving, but I was hungover and that was enough for me," she confessed. In a 2019 interview with Modern Luxury, she clarified it was the aftermath of drinking—the hangovers—that were problematic for her.
Hathaway's upcoming projects include 'The Idea of You'
On the professional front, Hathaway is set to appear in several upcoming projects. She will star alongside Nicholas Galitzine in Michael Showalter's forthcoming romantic comedy The Idea of You. It is slated to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 2. Additionally, roles in Flowervale Street and Mother Mary are also lined up for the actor, offering fans much to look forward to.
