'Nayak 2' will focus on existing characters, Anil-Rani might return
The landmark 2001 political thriller, Nayak: The Real Hero, directed by S Shankar and starring Anil Kapoor, will reportedly spawn a sequel after 23 years. Deepak Mukut, who produced films such as Dhaakad and Thank God, has bought the rights to the film from its original producer, AM Rathnam. These rights include intellectual property, adaptation, and copyright of both the original and its sequel. Now, Mukut has revealed that the makers will continue the story with the original characters.
The second part will most likely be a direct sequel
The sequel will continue the story of Shivaji (Kapoor), a TV presenter turned politician. The film will delve into the life of Shivaji and his family after he comes into power as the Chief Minister. "The film will examine what happens to Shivaji and his family after he has been in power. It will again explore themes of corruption, bureaucracy, and above all, the power of people," Mukut told Mid-Day.
Original cast members expected to reprise roles in 'Nayak' sequel
Mukut added, "We are writing the script right now with the leads in mind and [incorporating] other actors too. As soon as the writing is complete, we'll decide the way ahead." Going by Mukut's statement, Rani Mukerji, who was paired opposite Kapoor, may have a pivotal role in Nayak 2. She was last seen in Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway, released in 2023. It's unclear if Shankar will return for the sequel.
