Aanand L Rai's 'Tere Ishq Mein' to echo 'Raanjhanaa' vibes
Acclaimed filmmaker Aanand L Rai has announced that his hotly-anticipated upcoming directorial venture, Tere Ishq Mein, will start filming in October. The movie will feature Rai's frequent collaborator, Tamil actor Dhanush, who previously worked with him in Atrangi Re. While the female lead for the film is yet to be revealed, there are speculations about Triptii Dimri and Kriti Sanon being considered for the role.
Rai's exploration of love and tragedy
In an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha, Rai discussed Tere Ishq Mein and his aspiration to revisit the essence of his successful film, Raanjhanaa—which also starred Dhanush. "In 2011, after Tanu Weds Manu, I was curious to see how a person like me would handle tragedy," he said, adding, "When Himanshu (Sharma, the writer) brought the world of Raanjhanaa to me, I was eager to explore a story centered on love and tragedy," he said.
'Tere Ishq Mein' and 'Raanjhanaa' share the same universe
Rai drew a comparison between Raanjhanaa and Tere Ishq Mein, stating that they exist in the same universe. "The rage, aggression, and passionate love present in Raanjhanaa are also evident in Tere Ishq Mein. That's why I feel Tere Ishq Mein is from the world of Raanjhanaa," Rai explained.
Filmmaker expressed confidence in Dhanush's maturity
When questioned about Dhanush's response to a similar script, Rai expressed faith in the actor's growth. Rai stated, "After many years of working together, I know Dhanush has matured." "He was a brilliant actor then, and he's even better now, as an actor, writer, and director. He's more assured of himself. Even if he were to tackle a similar story, he'd approach it differently," he added.
Rai's approach to resonate with Gen-Z
Rai also recognized the difficulty of presenting a love story that resonates with the Gen-Z audience. "This time, I'll be speaking to Gen-Z and presenting a love story that resonates with them." "I'm making Tere Ishq Mein for myself, with a new story, a fresh approach, and an innovative way of storytelling," he concluded. To note, Rai's last theatrical release was the family comedy-drama Raksha Bandhan (2022), which was a box-office disappointment.
