Cast, plot: Everything about upcoming Hollywood film 'Freakier Friday'
Disney has officially announced the production of a sequel to its 2003 hit film, Freaky Friday. The upcoming movie, titled Freakier Friday, will continue the story of the mother-daughter duo Anna and Tess Coleman. The characters were originally portrayed by Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in the first film, which was based on Mary Rodgers's 1972 novel. The sequel is helmed by Nisha Ganatra.
What to expect from the sequel
According to the official synopsis, the sequel "picks up years after Tess (Lee Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice." In a new update, it was recently revealed that The Good Place actor Manny Jacinto will essay the role of Lohan's husband.
Sequel idea first proposed by Lee Curtis
The idea for a Freaky Friday sequel was first suggested by Lee Curtis during an appearance on The View in October 2022. Curtis expressed her interest in reprising her role and mentioned that she had already written to Disney about the project. Lohan confirmed her involvement in the sequel a month later during an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Disney greenlit sequel in May 2023
In May 2023, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Disney had officially greenlit the sequel. Lohan further confirmed this during an interview on SiriusXM's Andy Cohen Live in March 2024. Later that month, Lee Curtis posted a photo of her and Lohan's reunion on Instagram, tagging Disney and captioning it "DUH! FFDEUX!" The production of Freakier Friday officially began on June 24 in Los Angeles.
Original cast members to reprise roles in the sequel
In addition to Lohan and Lee Curtis reprising their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman respectively, Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray will also return as Ryan Volvo and Jake. Other original cast members including Christina Vidal Mitchell (Maddie), Haley Hudson (Peg), Lucille Soong (Pei-Pei's mom), Stephen Tobolowsky (Mr. Bates), and Rosalind Chao (Pei-Pei) are also set to reprise their roles in the sequel.
