With this impressive performance, it has gone past Deadpool & Wolverine, which previously dominated the box office for three consecutive weeks. The latter now sits in second place with a $29M opening weekend. Now, Disney holds the top two spots at the North American box office.
Disney accounts for massive 42% of summer box office revenue
Disney's success this year has been further boosted by the performances of Romulus and Deadpool 3. The studio accounts for 42% of the US summer box office, remaining in the No. 1 position for eight out of 16 weekends. This includes Inside Out 2, which has become the highest-grossing animated film of all time with global earnings of $1.626B, and Deadpool & Wolverine, which holds the title for the highest-grossing R-rated film with worldwide collections of $1.143B.
'Alien: Romulus' records second biggest domestic opening in franchise
Directed by Fede Alvarez, Alien: Romulus witnessed strong ticket sales during its opening weekend, with earnings of $18M on Friday, $13M on Saturday, and $10M on Sunday, according to Box Office Mojo. Disney has described this as "the second biggest domestic opening in the current Alien series and the biggest opening of director Fede Alvarez's career."
