Alec Baldwin diagnosed with PTSD following 'Rust' shooting incident
What's the story
Renowned actor Alec Baldwin has revealed that he has been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following the tragic Rust shooting incident.
The revelation came during the premiere episode of his family's new TLC reality series, The Baldwins.
His wife, Hilaria Baldwin, opened up about his mental health struggles since the 2021 accident that resulted in the tragic demise of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Emotional turmoil
'Why couldn't it have been me?'
Hilaria revealed Baldwin often asks why he survived the accident.
"If an accident had to have happened this day, why am I still here? Why couldn't it have been me?" she said.
She also revealed that those close to him have seen his mental health deteriorate.
In a conversation with his wife, Baldwin confessed, "I'm happier when I'm asleep than when I'm awake," highlighting his emotional turmoil.
Personal challenges
Baldwin's struggle with daily life and family support
Describing his experience as "surreal," Baldwin said he couldn't believe what he and his wife were going through. He said he feels more pain for his wife than himself, saying, "I always feel more in pain about you than me."
Baldwin also said there were times he felt he couldn't get out of bed due to the emotional weight of the past years.
Despite the struggles, both Baldwins agreed their kids have been a source of happiness amid their turmoil.
Legal proceedings
Baldwin's legal battle and family's ongoing pain
Baldwin, who was charged with involuntary manslaughter after Hutchins's fatal shooting on October 21, 2021, pleaded not guilty.
He has always maintained his innocence, claiming he didn't pull the trigger and didn't know the gun had real ammunition instead of dummy rounds.
His case was dismissed in July 2024. However, despite the legal resolution, Hilaria said their lives will never be the same because of how this tragedy has impacted their family's narrative.
