First look photos from Disney's live-action 'Aladdin' revealed
Aladdin is among the slew of live-action remakes that Disney has undertaken. These films are focused on feeding off nostalgia while introducing a fresh perspective to the fan-favorite stories and make them relevant in the modern day and age. To this extent, a new Aladdin movie is being made that will release in 2019. They recently revealed their first look, which we'll decode here.
Who plays what in this new version of 'Aladdin'
For those unaware, the film is being directed by Guy Ritchie who has asserted that his experience and skills would make the film feel fresh but could not completely wash away the daunting nostalgia. It stars Will Smith as the Genie, which everyone had expected to be CGI, Mena Massoud as the titular Aladdin and Naomi Scott plays the role of Princess Jasmine.
What does the first look show us?
The first look shows us Smith as the Genie, but not sporting the familiar blue color. His hair is in some sort of top knot. That is unfamiliar as well. Aladdin and Jasmine stand against each other striking a pose. Other pictures depict Genie and Aladdin having a conversation in the desert, while another picture shows Jasmine and Aladdin in some kind of disguise.
Fans concerned about Genie's look, Smith assures authenticity
Naturally, fans were concerned about Smith's hair and the Genie's lack of blue color. Smith assured fans that he would be blue and the first look was just how the Genie is in a human or disguised form. He also said he would be CGI for most of the movie. Fans accepted that maybe Smith's genie would look better in motion than still pictures.
My character will be CGI most of the movie: Smith
Let's wait for the film before making snap judgments
Aladdin was under scrutiny to ensure that the film didn't whitewash characters. Although fans may crib about Smith's casting as the genie, it was apt. Mena's casting was appreciable for the ethnic treatment. However, there is some discontent about casting the British Scott as the middle-eastern Jasmine. Still, we should wait to see how trailers and the film handle characters before making snap judgments.
