Body shaming controversy: Telugu director apologizes, actor stands by him
What's the story
Renowned actor Anshu Ambani has come out in defense of Telugu director Trinadha Rao Nakkina after he was embroiled in a controversy for his remarks on her looks.
The actor, who is making a comeback to films after almost two decades, called Rao Nakkina "the loveliest man on the planet" and hinted that his comments were taken out of context.
This defense comes after the filmmaker apologized for his comments made during the teaser launch of their upcoming film Mazaka.
Actor's statement
'He has treated me like family throughout this journey'
In a video message, Ambani thanked fans for their overwhelming response to the film's teaser and addressed the controversy.
She said, "I really want to assure you all that he's the loveliest man on the planet. He really is, and I believe his words may have been taken out of context."
"He has treated me like family throughout this journey. Over the 60 days I've worked on this film, I've received nothing but respect, love, and good wishes."
Film emphasis
Ambani urged focus on film, not controversy
Further in her statement, Ambani urged everyone to focus on the film and not the controversy.
She said, "Let's put this to rest. I'm so excited about the movie and hope we can all watch it for the right reasons."
"Trinadha has been a joy to work with, and I couldn't have asked for a better director to guide me back into the Telugu industry. I'm truly grateful for him and the entire team."
Apology issued
Rao Nakkina's controversial remarks and subsequent apology
The controversy started when Rao Nakkina said at the teaser launch, "Does she [Anshu] still look the same as in her Manmadhudu (2002 film) days? She's a bit thinner now. I told her to eat and gain weight because, for Telugu cinema, it's not enough - she needs to be a bigger size."
The remarks were widely criticized, prompting the Women's Commission to send a notice to the director.
Rao Nakkina later apologized saying his comments were made in jest.
