Oscars: Academy releases shortlisted titles for nine categories
Advancing toward the deadline of April 25 when the 93rd Academy Awards will be held, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the shortlisted titles for nine categories. The categories include original song, visual effects, animated short film, original score, makeup and hairstyling, international feature film, documentary short subject, live-action short film and documentary features. Shortlisted titles will be revisited for nomination
Each of these categories have a minimum of 10 shortlisted titles and a maximum of 15 titles. Now, the race is about to tighten up as the final nominees for each category will be announced on March 15, over a month before the ceremony, which still has no assurance of having an in-person setup due to COVID-19 safety norms.
Indian short film 'Bittu' makes it to the list
India's official entry Jallikattu lost its chance, but Bittu, a short film directed by Karishma Dev Dube, and backed by Ekta Kapoor, Guneet Monga and Tahira Kashyap, has been selected in the Live Action Short Film category. Among documentary features, there is Chilean drama The Mole Agent and Romanian title Collective, both of which also made it to the Best International Feature category's shortlist.
'Mank,' 'Tenet,' 'One Night in Miami' score big
Gary Oldman-starrer Herman J Mankiewicz biopic Mank surfaced in three lists: visual effects, original score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and makeup and hairstyling. Tenet also featured on the VFX and original score lists. Similarly, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey and Mulan also got included in three categories each. One Night in Miami featured in original song (Speak Now), and makeup and hairstyling.
Rezner, Ross, Diane Warren, John Legend feature multiple times
Reznor and Ross also got selected alongside composer Jon Baptiste for Disney's animated flick Soul for original score. Soul also got included on the VFX list, while Korean language Minari got selected for original song and score. While popular contenders Tayor Swift and Justin Timberlake were absent from the lists, both Diane Warren and John Legend got featured twice for their songs.
