Born on June 8, 1957, Indian actress Dimple Kapadia is one of the leading and most successful actresses of Bollywood. Born in Mumbai to parents belonging to the Ismaili Khoja community, Kapadia studied at St. Joseph’s Convent High School. She was interested in acting from a very young age, and made her debut at the age of 14 years in the 1973 movie ‘Bobby’ which was directed by Raj Kapoor, and starred actor Rishi Kapoor. The movie was a blockbuster hit, and Kapadia’s role as the lead actress was critically lauded. The following year, before the release of ‘Bobby,’ 15-year-old Kapadia married actor Rajesh Khanna, who was then 30-years old. She quit acting at the behest of her husband. Actor Twinkle Khanna and Rinkie Khanna are their daughters. Though not officially divorced, the two separated in 1982. Following their separation, Kapadia made a comeback in Bollywood with the blockbuster hit ‘Saagar’ (1985), starring actors Rishi Kapoor and Kamal Haasan, and directed by Ramesh Sippy. With a career spanning more than 40 years, Kapadia has appeared in more than 50 Bollywood movies, as of 2021. Some of her critically lauded movies include ‘Arjun’ (1985), ‘Allah Rakha’ (1986), ‘Insaniyat Ke Dushman’ (1987), ‘Kaash’ (1987), ‘Ram Lakhan’ (1988), ‘Zakhmi Aurat’ (1988), ‘Krantiveer’ (1994), ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ (2001), ‘Luck By Chance’ (2009), and ‘Patiala House’ (2011) among others. In 2021, she appeared in the Indian political thriller web series ‘Tandav’ along with Saif Ali Khan, Tigmanshu Dhulia, and Sunil Grover. She is the recipient of one National Award, four Filmfare Awards, one Damascus International Film Festival Award, and one Asia-Pacific Film Festival Award. Actor Akshay Kumar is married to her daughter Twinkle Khanna.
