5 things we know about Marvel's upcoming miniseries 'Secret Invasion'
One of the most-awaited offerings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Secret Invasion, a mini-series based on a 2008 comic book series. The series is reportedly nearing the end of production but doesn't have a release date yet. Secret Invasion will join MCU series like WandaVision, The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Loki, and Hawkeye. Here's what we know about Secret Invasion so far!
Who will be starring in 'Secret Invasion'?
Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos (first seen in 2019's Captain Marvel) will be reprising their roles in the series. Other big names who have reportedly been signed on include Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, and Carmen Ejogo. However, details about their roles have been a tightly guarded secret.
Surprise entry into the cast!
In a recent interview, Jackson let slip that another major MCU character will be joining Secret Invasion and it's none other than CIA operative Everett Ross, played by actor Martin Freeman. To recall, Freeman made his MCU debut with Captain America: Civil War (2016) in a minor role and also appeared in Black Panther (2018) in a larger supporting role.
What could be the plot of the series?
The upcoming Marvel series is said to revolve around the Skrulls, who have invaded Earth after their planet's destruction. Skrulls, who have shape-shifting abilities, have been planning the invasion for some time by impersonating politicians and other powerful people on Earth to make way for a global takeover. And, this leaves the Avengers scrambling to fight back since they don't know who to trust.
Crossovers within the MCU
Interestingly, Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) have Skrull connections that could be further explored in Secret Invasion. Jackson and Mendelsohn first appeared together in Brie Larson-starrer Captain Marvel—it was this film that introduced Skrulls to the MCU. Whereas, the post-credit scene in Tom Holland's Spider-Man flick revealed Hill and Fury—appearing in that movie—to actually be Skrulls working for the real Fury.
When will 'Secret Invasion' release?
There has been no official announcement regarding the release date of Secret Invasion. However, it is likely to launch on Disney+ this year. Marvel Studios is yet to comment on the same. Meanwhile, other Marvel films scheduled to release this year include Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
