Showrunners clarify unique '3 Body Problem' renewal announcement
Showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff have provided clarity on the recent renewal announcement of the popular Netflix series 3 Body Problem. The science-fiction show, which topped Netflix's most-watched television series chart, is confirmed to return for "additional episodes." Netflix made this decision intending to conclude the story. Now, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Weiss and Benioff clarified what the renewal implies for the future of the show.
Why does this story matter?
The renewal announcement sparked confusion among fans regarding whether Netflix intends to fully adapt Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past series or just confirm a Season 2. Weiss and Benioff are currently penning Season 2 and plan to work on the remaining episodes over the next three years. However, they did not reveal the exact number of episodes or seasons. This commitment follows their four-year dedication to Season 1.
Weiss, Benioff shared insight into future seasons
During the interview, Weiss stated, "We knew going into this how many hours we need to tell the rest of the story because we've got a roadmap through to the end." He added, "And we have what we need to get to the end as intended from when we started." Benioff echoed Weiss's sentiments, stating, "By the time we finish with the show, it will be seven years we've devoted to it."
'3 Body Problem' likely to continue beyond Season 2
Although they did not confirm the exact number of seasons or episodes, comments from Weiss and Benioff suggest that 3 Body Problem will continue beyond Season 2. They had previously indicated that three or four seasons would be required to adapt Cixin's novels namely, The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death's End. The success of Season 1 has instilled confidence in Netflix regarding their vision, too.
Netflix's renewal decision highlighted the value of '3 Body Problem'
The extended renewal provides Weiss and Benioff with sufficient time to complete their adaptation without having to rush toward an early conclusion in Season 2. This decision marks a shift from Netflix's recent trend of canceling many series before they can properly conclude their stories. For those unaware, the series follows an astrophysicist who is conscripted into a secret military base where her contact with an alien planet sets off a chain of events.
