The 2017 Emmy Nominations announced
The Emmy nominations are out and it looks like "Saturday Night Live" and "Westworld" will lead the pack with 22 nominations each. While HBO maintained its lead with 110 nominations, Netflix wasn't far behind with 91 nominations. The awards will take place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on 17 September. This year Stephen Colbert will host the ceremony.
A wide-open race for the drama
While a lot of older players were nominated this year, the 2017 list also included 5 new shows. Previous nominees included "Better Call Saul" and "House of Cards". However, "Mr. Robot" and "Homeland" failed to be nominated this year. First-time nominees include "Stranger Things" (Netflix), "The Crown" (Netflix), "The Handmaid's Tale" (Hulu), "This Is Us" (NBC) and "Westworld" (HBO).
Drama's leading men and ladies
Actresses nominated for leads in drama are Viola Davis, "How to Get Away With Murder", Claire Foy, "The Crown", Elisabeth Moss, "The Handmaid's Tale", Keri Russell, "The Americans", Evan Rachel Wood, "Westworld", Robin Wright, "House of Cards". Sterling K. Brown, Anthony Hopkins, Bob Odenkirk, Matthew Rhys, Liev Schreiber, Kevin Spacey, Milo Ventimiglia will fight for the best leading actor's trophy this year.
The kings and queens of comedy
Pamela Adlon, Jane Fonda, Allison Janney, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ellie Kemper, Tracee Ellis Ross, Lily Tomlin are pitted against each other for best actress, comedy. Amongst the men Anthony Anderson, Aziz Ansari, Zach Galifianakis, Donald Glover, William Macy, Jeffrey Tambor were nominated. "Atlanta", "Black-ish", "Master of None", "Modern Family", "Silicon Valley", "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", "Veep" will compete for the best comedy series.
Find out if your favourites missed the cut
It was a shocker to see Jimmy Fallon missing out in the best talk show category. Even Jerry Seinfeld's 'Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee' failed to get itself nominated. Leftovers did not get any nominations in the main categories, and plus Girls and Transparent missed their best comedy nominations. Mr Robot's Rami Malek despite winning last year wasn't nominated this year.
Nominations fail to have actors of color in all categories
The 2016 Emmys recorded history by nominating actors of color in all the leading actor categories- a first. However, this year's nominations saw no actors of color drafted in the best actress in a television musical or a limited series.
