Haryana introduces hefty fines for drinking in cars
Haryana has introduced a fine of Rs 5,000 for drinking in vehicles on the road, in parks, or by rivers, with immediate-effect. A repeat offender would be fined Rs 10,000. The driver will be detained, and the vehicle confiscated. Opposition parties claim that instead of deterring such activities, this would just lead to harassment of civilians by cops. Hundreds of JNU students, teachers march to Parliament House
Hundreds of JNU students and teachers marched from Mandi House to the Parliament to protest the "undemocratic decision-making" in implementation of a UGC notification. Many claim it will lead to massive seat cuts, and that VC Jagadesh Kumar is announcing his "arbitrary decisions" through press conferences rather than holding discussions. Politicians including Digvijay Singh and D.Raja joined in.
Man beheads wife over 'illicit affair', stores head under bed
A 40-year-old plumber in Madhu Vihar beat his first wife to death in front of his second wife and three kids on February 10, then chopped her body into two, beheaded her and kept her head under the bed. He suspected her of having an illicit affair. He planned to chop the body into smaller parts, but was arrested on February 15.
Govt asks Ola, Uber to sort out issues of drivers
The Delhi government convened a meeting between Rajdhani Tourist Driver Union and Ola and Uber representatives to sort out issues. However, Sarvodaya Driver Association of Delhi, which is leading the strike, was reportedly left out. The government asked the companies to look into problems of drivers at the earliest. Meanwhile, the strike turned more violent as protesters set fire to a cab in Ghaziabad.
Jat agitation likely to turn violent from February 19
A CID letter to cops, warning the Jat agitation will turn violent after February 19, was leaked, and has gone viral on social media. The letter says more people are likely to join the agitation on February 19, that protesters observe as Martyrs' Day. The Delhi border will be sealed from February 18 midnight. 30 people died last year in the agitation.
Delhi Metro hit by snags, commuters suffer
Erratic power supply on February 14 led to four round-trip cancellations, one partial cancellation, and two delays on the Violet Line. A similar snag hit services on the Yellow Line the day before. DMRC has attributed these technical glitches to an outdated signaling system. The Blue Line is the most vulnerable. However, shutting it down for months to change the system is not practical.
Car runs over homeless men, kills one, injures two
A car ran over a homeless man sleeping near a bus stand at Chhatarpur, killing him and injuring two others. The speeding car hit a corner of the bus stand, ran over the three, then hit a wall and stopped. The driver tried to flee, but was caught by locals. Alcohol bottles were recovered from the car. The driver has been arrested.
No garbage disposal system in 80 Greater Noida villages
Nearly 80 villages acquired by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority ten years ago, including Bhanota, Khairpur, Khedi, Seni and Sunpura, still don't have a proper waste collection and disposal system in place. Garbage is either thrown into ponds or burnt in the open. Despite a tender notice being posted in December, no private body had put in bids for the work.
