Last Day, Last Show: Delhi's Regal Cinema closes down
85-year-old Regal Cinema of CP will shut down on 30th March and will make a comeback as a multiplex. The last two shows it will screen will draw a houseful; more than 80% tickets have been booked for the screening of Raj Kapoor's 'Mera Naam Joker' and 'Sangam'. L-G reveals Yamuna River Project
Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Anil Baijal, launched the 'Yamuna River Project' at India Habitat Centre on Wednesday. The project will apply sustainable bio-remediation technologies to clean the river and will make use of long-term management strategies to create city-level assets. The project, according to Baijal, is the most "concrete" plan he has witnessed in 40 years.
Delhi University faculty, students march against autonomous status
On Wednesday, a march was organized by hundreds of faculty members and students studying in colleges affiliated to the Delhi University from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar. The march was organized to protest against the decentralization and privatization of the Delhi University through autonomous colleges. The rally protested against the government's encouragements towards autonomy of colleges without allowing public discussions on the same.
75% of police cases registered last year went unsolved
During the Question Hour in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, the Centre confessed that Delhi Police was unable to solve 75% of the cases registered with it last year. Out of the 2,16,920 cases registered, only 50,423 were solved. Minister of State for Home Affairs, Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, said that most unresolved cases could be classified as 'non-heinous crimes' such as thefts and petty fights.
IIT Student jumps off balcony, was "under pressure"
19-year-old Nitish Kumar Purti from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Delhi), allegedly jumped off from the fourth floor of the Vidhyanchal Hostel inside the Delhi campus. The Engineering Physics student is being treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS); he endured multiple fractures. Police said Purti was forced into taking the course and was thus unable to cope with the pressure.
Pragati Maidan revamp could miss deadline
The redevelopment of Pragati Maidan into an Integrated Exhibition cum Convention Centre for the G20-summit hasn't yet received statutory clearances and is caught in a legal tussle over the demolition of three of its pavilions. The Rs. 2,254crore project is aimed to be completed by the first-half of 2019. The approaching court-trial and pending approvals have created fears about the failure of this project.
CM's flying squad carries day-long drive against illegal products, activities
The Chief Minister's flying squad on Wednesday carried out a day-long drive against the manufacture of counterfeit products, adulterous liquor and eatables across Gurugram. 23 people were arrested in connection with the discovery of illicit liquor worth Rs. 1.30 lakh inclusive of Indian-made foreign liquor, country-made liquor and beer. Gas cylinders being used illegally for commercial operations were also seized.
