'Short skirts not invitation to rape': Delhi men demand women's-safety
'Short skirts are not an invitation to rape' - several men silently gave out this strong message by wearing only shorts to a rally on Tuesday. The men, volunteers of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW)'s 'Rape Roko' campaign, took out the rally protesting the rape of an eight-month-old baby in January. DCW had decided last month to take out an anti-rape rally.
"What clothes was the eight-month-old baby wearing?"
They marched from Mandi house till Central Park holding placards having slogans like - "Her clothes are not short, your mentality is" and "What clothes was the eight-month-old baby wearing?" - written in an attempt to shame perpetrators and not survivors. On March 8, they plan to form a human chain in Connaught Place to protest rapes.
Indian Medical Association comes out in support of DCW rally
"We strongly support 'Rape Roko' to demand a robust criminal justice system which ensures cases of sexual crimes against women and children are tried by fast-track courts within six months and child rapists are essentially accorded death penalty," the IMA wrote.
Rape cases in Delhi tripled in five years
In January, a 28-year-old man forced himself on his eight-month-old cousin while drunk. The rape left the baby so battered that she had to be kept on life support. According to Delhi Police, rape cases have tripled in recent years, registering an increase of 277% from 572 in 2011 to 2,155 in 2016. DCW has been fighting vigorously to prevent rape cases.
