Delhi: Elevated road to be built over Shahdara drain
Ride between East Delhi and Noida is set to become smooth, as the decision to build an elevated road over Shahdara drain was approved by the Noida authority yesterday. Several residents' welfare associations have been demanding this since last year. The Rs. 650cr project will connect Mayur Vihar-I and Noida expressway, and meander through Noida sectors 14A, 15A and 16A, helping office-goers and motorists.
Now, Delhi Government should permit construction on Shahdara drain
The Delhi government owns the drain, so its permission is necessary to commence construction of the 5.5km-road. The stretch between Mayur Vihar to Sector-18 always remains clogged and to ease that, the Noida authority was also toying with the idea of widening the Delhi-Noida Link Road. However, it would have meant cutting down 600 trees. For elevated-road, there's no need to cut-down these trees.
50:50 cost sharing: UP State Bridge Corporation (L), Noida authority
UP State Bridge Corporation Ltd. will bear 50% of the project cost and the rest will be borne by Noida authority. Interestingly, this arrangement was reached after UP Corporation refused to participate in the tender, since it is a government agency.
Not the first time: Plan proposed in 2012 as well
This is not the first time Noida authority has forwarded such a proposal. In 2012, the plan failed since the Delhi government had rejected it. Last year, a committee led by Noida authority's CEO Alok Tandon was formed by three UP ministers, asking for a de-congestion plan. The panel prepared a detailed draft, which was sent to UP government for further action.
