Delhi Metro to open its 3rd-longest stretch on Magenta Line
Commuters on Delhi Metro will soon be able to travel in one of its longest underground stretches, spanning over 10.16 km, with the inauguration of the Kalkaji-Vasant Vihar stretch on the Magenta Line. This is the longest underground stretch in Phase 3 metro, the third longest stretch in the entire metro network. A section of the Line (Kalkaji-Botanical Garden) was opened in December.
All the stretches longer than Kalkaji-Vasant Vihar
The longest underground stretch of Delhi Metro is GTB Nagar-Saket of Phase 2 spanning 13.43 km. The Central Secretariat- Vishwavidyalaya section of Phase 1 covers 11 km. The Kalkaji-Vasant Vihar stretch comes at the third position.
Entire Magenta Line expected to open by mid-April
The work on the magenta line is complete and DMRC is waiting for safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). The opening of this line will reduce commuting time between West and South Delhi, and will also help those travelling to Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad. The Magenta Line also connects RK Puram, Munirka and Vasant Vihar by metro.
Constructing underground section of Magenta Line wasn't easy, DMRC says
A spokesperson said, "Engineers closely monitored the movement of the tunnel boring machines on a round-the-clock basis. The tunnel also passes below the already operational metro tunnel of the Yellow Line at Hauz Khas, which was also an obstacle we had to overcome."
