Gurugram: No meat shops in residential areas, says CM Khattar

Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar ordered that no license would be issued for setting up meat shops in the residential areas of Gurugram.
The move sparked a controversy with the opposition claiming that BJP government was "saffronizing" and "dictating" people's food habits.
Most of the 2,300 meat shops currently operating in residential areas are likely to be affected by the decision.

"Meat ban" in Haryana after beef ban?
The Congress leaders in Haryana expressed concern that most meat shops would have to shut down in Gurugram, due to which the livelihood of thousands would be impacted.
However, people in Gurugram are also not happy with the government's decision.
The opposition claimed the government already banned beef in Haryana, and with the latest move, it plans to force "meat ban".

About 666 meat shops shut down in May
In May'17, the Khattar government ordered the closure of unlicensed meat shops and slaughterhouses in Haryana. Nearly 670 meat shops shut down after the order.
Civic bodies were directed to regularize the sale of meat in the state.
To acquire a meat shop license, owners will have to follow 21 conditions, including not slaughtering animals in shops but at places specified by municipal bodies.
