Dwarka: Wearing sunglasses at night foils kidnapping bid
Without proper planning, anything is a colossal failure. This is what happened to Vatan Ram and Janmahan Singh when they kidnapped a man, but made him wear sunglasses at night, which raised police's suspicion. The victim, a Manesar-based tea-seller, had sold land for Rs. 3cr to the Haryana Government. One of the kidnappers knew of it, and roped in another to get the money.
Victim kidnapped from near his tea-stall at IMT
Monday around 9.30PM, a masked Janmahan approached 48-year-old Harpal Singh who runs his shop near IMT Manesar, Gurugram. Janmahan ordered two cups of tea and told him to serve it in his car that was parked nearby. Harpal agreed, only to realize it was a mistake. Once he reached the car, Janmahan put a pistol to Harpal's head and asked him to get in.
Night cops noticed the commercial vehicle had white number plate
Harpal resisted but was hit by the 9mm pistol butt, after which he went unconscious and was pushed inside the car. His eyes were blindfolded, and they put a sunglass to cover that. Vatan started the car but just after 50 minutes, their luck ran out. The cops stationed at Chhawla in Dwarka noticed the car was a commercial vehicle having a white number-plate.
Cops noticed man lying on car's backseat, injured, limbs tied
They signaled them to stop, but Vatan accelerated and sped off. The cops followed and finally overpowered them. They spotted a man lying on the car's backseat whose shirt had bloodstains, hands and legs were tied and eyes blindfolded, covered with a sunglass. When asked, Singh said he's their senior and they are about to drop him. The cops, naturally unconvinced, intercepted them.
Harpal and Janmahan knew each other, had discussed land deal
While Harpal was rushed to a hospital with eye and head injuries, both Vatan and Janmahan confessed about their kidnapping plan. They said Harpal and Janmahan knew each other as the former had arranged for a job for the latter. They had also talked about the government deal that happened last month. Janmahan then discussed this with Vatan and both planned the abduction.
While Vatan owned two taxis, Janmahan was laborer
Initially they had planned to demand a ransom of Rs. 3L, and then torture Harpal to extract more, said Anto Alphonse, DCP (Dwarka), adding they were taking Harpal to a DDA flat at Bakkarwala, owned by Vatan. Police have seized the pistol and car. Upon investigation, cops found that Vatan owned two taxis, which were being run for app-based platforms till a month ago.
