Delhi: Husband strangles wife, slits her throat, then surrenders
Marital discord apparently drove a man to take his wife's life. Umesh, a mechanic in Delhi's Bindapur, strangled Meenakshi, slit her throat with a kitchen knife, and surrendered to police. The couple had married ten years ago. She was his second wife. Police have learnt that the two argued regularly. Umesh, who has a daughter from his earlier marriage, has no child with Meenakshi.
Umesh sat beside her corpse and wept for 30 minutes
The crime happened on Thursday afternoon in their flat. Umesh, 40, told police that afterwards, he sat beside her corpse and wept for almost half an hour. His 14-year-old daughter, who stayed in a flat just beneath theirs, wasn't aware of the incident. Umesh then approached the Bindapur police station to surrender. When the cops didn't believe him, he showed them his bloodied hands.
Umesh, who has confessed to police, has been arrested
Umesh then asked cops to accompany him to his flat. His daughter found out only when police reached the place. Police rushed Meenakshi's body to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead. They have recovered the kitchen knife used for the murder. Umesh has also confessed. A murder case was lodged and the man arrested.
Was domestic violence a regular incident in the home?
Family members of Meenakshi, who had a love marriage with Umesh, allege that she had filed complaints against her husband with the Delhi Commission for Women and police as "she was fed up with the domestic violence."
