Over 50 shanties gutted in fire in slums near Yamuna
A major fire broke out in East Delhi's Yamuna Khadar slum cluster on Sunday afternoon. Even though no casualties were reported, over 50 shanties were gutted in the blaze that broke out in the slums on the banks of the Yamuna, said police. Police said that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and it may be a case of sabotage.
Locals were not allowing fire tenders to enter the area
The fire broke out following the action by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) against an unauthorized nursery in the area, police said. A senior police officer said they were informed about the incident at 1:50 pm, adding the locals were not allowing the fire tenders to enter the area. Police said some representatives of the Bhartiya Kisan Union were also present at the spot.
Residents were sent notice by DDA to vacate the place
It was later found that the DDA had recently sent a notice to the residents running nurseries in the area to vacate the place since it was unauthorized. "Since then, the residents had been sitting in protest against the move. Today, when the DDA team finally arrived, locals tried to stop them," the police officer said. Police have registered a case in the matter.
