IGI becomes world's 12th busiest airport, records highest growth rate
The IGI has become the only Indian airport to enter the world's top-15 league, becoming the 12th busiest airport in November'16, a Civil Aviation Organization report has revealed. It also recorded the world's highest growth rate at 19.1%. IGI, which records an average of 1,185 air traffic movements daily, also crossed the 50-million passenger mark in November. AIIMS user charges may increase after 20 years
The Finance Ministry has asked AIIMS to review and revise its user charges, which have been in place since 1996. Currently, it generates about Rs 101 crore from user charges, but has been demanding additional allocation of Rs 300 crore. Many doctors have opposed hike in charges, stating the hospital is meant for the "poorest of the poor". The administration is examining the proposal.
Ola, Uber cabs to stay off roads on Monday too
The strike by Ola and Uber drivers in the NCR, protesting dwindling profits and long working hours, will continue on February 13. Waiting times and surge prices remained high during the weekend. Auto and taxi drivers have called off their participation in the strike. Delhi Metro is prepared for extra trips to clear the rush of commuters.
Another building collapses in CP within 10 days
An unoccupied building in L block of Middle Circle, Connaught Place collapsed, nine days after the roof of another shop in C block caved in. The mishap happened on February 11, the same day the shops affected by the previous collapse reopened. NDMC banned 21 rooftop restaurants post the accident. It has also asked owners to furnish structural stability certificates within a week.
Robbers who broke into Kailash Satyarthi's home nabbed
Three habitual offenders, a brothers' trio, have been arrested for allegedly breaking into Kailash Satyarthi's house on February 7 and stealing a replica of his Nobel Prize, a citation, and other items, including jewellery. Burglaries were reported at two more houses in the Kalkaji locality the same night. The citation, which the robbers said they had dumped on the way, hasn't been recovered yet.
Minor, driven around for 5 hours without medical help, dies
A minor died after a cabbie, who had hit him, drove him around for five hours without medical care. Rahul took Rohit and his mother in his Eeco after it ran into the kid playing outside his Mukherjee Nagar home. Once inside, he kept pleading not to report the matter. He took them to five hospitals, but said all of them had denied treatment.
Unsolved cases remain at an all-time high in 2016
The proportion of unsolved cases remained high in 2016, with 73% (1,53,562 of 2,09,519) cases registered under the IPC remaining open. 86% of vehicle thefts and residential robberies, and 40% of kidnapping and extortion cases stayed unsolved. Cops couldn't solve 1,132 of 4,165 molestation cases, and 291 of 2,155 rape cases. Despite a spike in most crime categories, the number of heinous crimes dropped.
Poorly-planned heist leads to arrest of gold thieves
Four men, who stole 32 kilos of gold from a Gurugram gold finance office, were nabbed from Ahmedabad. Hunt is on for four others involved. The robbers had stowed most of the gold into plastic containers. 30 kilos were recovered intact, 48 hours after the crime. The main accused had also shown his Aadhaar card to the guard at the office, easing the operation for the cops.
