Delhi rains: Heavy downpour triggers mayhem, IMD issues yellow alert
A fresh spell of rainfall soaked Delhi on Sunday morning, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting even more showers during the day. The national capital reportedly recorded 153mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours—the highest for a single day in July since 1982. The incessant rains caused a lot of inconvenience for Delhiites, with reports of waterlogging, power interruptions, and traffic snarls.
Delhi to receive heavy rains for next 2-3 days: IMD
The weather department on Saturday forecasted very heavy rain for the next two to three days in Delhi. As per Safdarjung Observatory, the primary weather station of the national capital, the city received 126.1mm of rainfall between 8:30am and 5:30pm on Saturday. Meanwhile, the weather department also issued a "yellow alert" in Delhi for Sunday.
IMD forecasts heavy rains in North India for next week
"Light to moderate intensity rain would continue over many places of Delhi and NCR, Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Assandh, Safidon, Panipat, Gohana, Gannaur, Meham, Sonipat, Rohtak, Kharkhoda, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Mattanhail, Jhajjar, Kosali, Sohana, Rewari (Haryana)," the IMD forecasted in a tweet on Saturday. "Heavy rains in North India for the next four to five days," the weather office said.

Monsoon triggers havoc in Delhi
The substantial downpours in Delhi continued the entire day on Saturday, reportedly damaging houses and throwing normal life out of gear. As per a Delhi Fire Service official, one person died, and a total of 15 houses collapsed due to heavy rains. On the other hand, the traffic department also received 56 calls regarding waterlogging, six about fallen trees, and five related to potholes.
NDMC provides update on drainage, waterlogging in Delhi
According to the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), the main drains are operating at their maximum capacity currently, triggering an overflow of water on the streets. Furthermore, waterlogging issues were also reported from the Pandav Nagar underpass, Dwarka Link Road, Purana Quila Road, Vikas Marg, Rohtak Road, under the AIIMS flyover, under the Moolchand flyover, and Mother Teresa Crescent-Sardar Patel Marg, among other locations.
Himachal's monsoon woes to continue
On the other hand, the IMD also issued a "red alert" for seven Himachal Pradesh districts as the state continues to witness heavy rainfall. The weather department also warned of avalanches and flash floods in the Lahaul and Spiti district. Besides this, the IMD also forecasted an "orange alert" for rainfall in three other districts, landslides, flash floods, and shooting stones in the state.
