Delhi Police to develop cyber cells for tackling online crimes
In a bid to tackle cyber crimes with ease and to fast-track investigations of online crimes, the Delhi Police has planned to restructure its cyber cell into an individual unit. The new unit will move out of the Economic Offences Wing soon and will function independently under a special commissioner appointed by the police. Police commissioner Amulya Patnaik announced about the unit recently.
Police personnel with computer knowledge to be deployed in unit
According to a report, as of now, the unit will keep a watch on internet propaganda and social media, online radicalization and other intelligence gatherings. However, the team also looks forward to working beyond investigating cyber-crimes. A senior official said that police personnel holding B.Tech degree or any other qualification related to computer science, will be selected and deployed in these cyber cell units.
Decision was taken after PM Modi stressed on cybercrime issues
The decision to restructure the cyber cell was taken after Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted on cyber-crime related issues and solving them during the annual conference of DGPs and IGPs at BSF Academy. According to a report, "There will be two DCP-rank officers in the unit. While one will handle the investigations and intelligence, the other will focus on training, awareness and administration."
