JNU: No seat cuts, says VC. Students allege "vague" assurance
JNU VC Jagadesh Kumar said some students are spreading "rumours" of seat cuts in MPhil/PhD programmes, and about 300 faculty vacancies will instead be filled soon. However, protesters said the administration is behaving in an "arbitrary" manner and were "threatening" dissenters. A list of 'negative vacancies' on the JNU website imply no admissions in MPhil/PhD programmes for some years, said JNU President Mohit Pandey.
Only 0.27% complaints against Delhi Police personnel investigated
Only 307 of 1.12 lakh calls, text and WhatsApp messages received in 2016 alleging wrongdoing by Delhi cops were probed. Most complaints were related to corruption (150), inaction (55), interference in land/property matters and abuse of power (102). This signified a drop from 2015, when the corruption and extortion complaints stood at 528, misbehavior by cops at 433, and improper action at 140.
HC restrains striking drivers from hampering Uber's operations
Uber took the striking drivers' unions to court, alleging protesters were threatening public safety apart from hampering its business. Protesters had also allegedly removed mobile devices installed in Uber's cabs. The HC has asked the unions to refrain from interfering in operations of Uber's cabs. Notice has been issued to them, who have been restrained from launching dharnas near Uber's office.
5,000 cartridges, 7 weapons seized from fake arms licence racketeer
Gurugram police have recovered 5,000 cartridges and seven illegal weapons from the house of Manish Bhardwaj, a fake arms license racketeer. Bhardwaj is absconding, but his aide has been arrested. The seized weapons include three pistols, a single barrel, a double barrel gun, and a shotgun. The aide has confessed about making fake licenses. However, Bhardwaj's kin claimed he is fond of hunting.
Sahibabad tense after Hindu group alleges cow slaughter
Tension gripped Sahibabad as members of Hindu Raksha Dal blocked the Delhi-Wazirabad Road after allegedly finding remains of a cow in Sikandarpur. An FIR against unidentified persons has been ordered. Hunt is on for those responsible for the alleged slaughter. Animal slaughters are not uncommon in Sikandarpur, where both Hindus and Muslims reside. Protests had broken out last month when cattle remains were found.
Another Noida firm allegedly dupes customers of Rs 500 crore
Days after a Rs 3,700-crore trading scam was busted in Noida, a complaint has been lodged against another firm for allegedly duping customers of Rs 500 crore. Ghaziabad resident Amit Kishore Jain alleged Webwork Trade Links Pvt Ltd lured 2,00,000 customers with a highly rewarding click-and-earn plan. An FIR has been filed against the company, which has suspended operations till April 20.
Rs 27.95 crore seized in 50 days post demonetization
In 50 days following demonetization, Rs 27.95 crore was seized from conduct of illegal activities in Delhi. Rs 3.01 crore was in denomination of Rs 2,000. Rs 5.74 crore was seized in fake notes and 80 cases registered. Eight cases were lodged over illegal transactions of old and new notes. There was heavy deployment of police immediately after November 8 to ensure peace.
