Delhi Metro commutes to cost up to Rs. 10 more
Commuting via the Delhi Metro will get costlier from October. In the second phase of metro fare hikes as suggested by the fourth Fare Fixation Committee, the fare will increase by up to Rs. 10. The first phase was implemented in May 2017. With Phase 2 being executed from October 10, Delhi Metro rides will cost between Rs. 10 and Rs. 60.
Why the need for a phased-out price revision?
A debt of Rs. 45,000 crore, constantly depleting savings, and an ever increasing operating ratio, leave the DMRC with little reserves for maintenance or tackling emergencies. According to the DMRC, before May 2017, the last time it revised its fares was in 2009.
Fare break-up: Know when you need to pay more
With the latest revision, commuters will now have to pay Rs. 10 for distances up to 2kms, Rs. 20 for 2-5 kms, Rs. 30 for 5-12 kms, Rs. 40 for 12-21 kms. Rs. 50 will be charged for distances between 21-32 kms and Rs. 60 for those over 32 kms. The maximum fare rate was hiked from Rs. 30 to Rs. 50 in May.
DMRC begins full signaling trials of driverless trains
Meanwhile, taking a major step towards the eventual commissioning of its Pink Line, the Delhi Metro started full signaling trials of its driverless trains on Saturday. The trials will be held along a 20-km-long stretch between South Campus and Majlis Park. The rehearsals will test the automation of the new metro trains, which aim to significantly increase their frequency.
