High-speed rail between Delhi-Meerut to save Rs. 6,300 crore
The high-speed rail corridor that will cut the travel time between Delhi and Meerut to just 62 minutes will also double up as a local metro for the people of Meerut. In addition, the executing agency officials said that this project will not only improve the network between the cities but will also help the government save at least around Rs. 6,300 crore.
Around 7,40,000 people are expected to commute daily
As per a report, around 7,40,000 people from Meerut are expected to commute daily after the regional rail transit system (RRTS) is built. Once completed, the RRTS will help ease heavy traffic on the 90-km stretch between the two cities. The project is being executed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation Limited (NCRTC).
NCRTC will build six more stations in Meerut
On conditions of anonymity, an NCRTC officer said that they will build six more stations and parallel tracks for the city's metro trains. The decision was confirmed by another NCRTC spokesperson who said, "It was made after the agency was told that its network would overlap with a part of the local metro network proposed to be built by the Uttar Pradesh government."
Construction of the rail corridor will begin by July, 2018
Reports say that the 92.6-km long corridor between Delhi-Meerut will connect the metro networks of Delhi (at Sarai Kale Khan on the Pink Line) with Meerut's at Partapur. The pre-construction activities for the high-speed rail corridor are currently underway and the construction will begin by July 2018, said NCRTC officials. The maximum speed of the RRTS trains is 180 kmph and average around 100kmph.
