Delhi: 'Groom' caught for duping, sexually exploiting several women
A 41-year-old man was arrested last week from Dwarka for allegedly cheating, blackmailing and sexually assaulting at least six women by pretending to be a Mumbai-based media honcho. The Cyber cell police said the accused, Anurag Mendiratta, created fake profiles on matrimonial sites, like Jeevansathi and Bharat matrimony, promised marriage to women and eventually duped them after either extorting money or taking sexual favors.
Extorted Rs. 6 lakh on pretext of father's treatment
In the first case, posing as media-honcho Sidharth Walia, Anurag contacted a woman in 2015 and gained her trust by showing 'concern' for her. Using VPN, he called her up and asked for Rs. 6 lakh for his father's treatment. After receiving money, he started avoiding her and even verbally abused her. She realized the con when she visited the channel office.
Anurag sexually assaulted her when she didn't give him money
In another case, Anurag approached a woman posing as sports-channel executive Sidharth Oberoi. In subsequent interactions, he asked the CR Park woman "to meet his cousin" Anurag Mendiratta, after which he started emotionally exploiting her to give him money. When she refused, he molested her. She lodged a complaint after realizing that Oberoi and Anurag sounded the same.
Accused, a BBA grad, worked as sales manager earlier
Two separate complaints - one in CR Park and another with Cyber Cell- were filed last year against Anurag, a BBA graduate from Lucknow, who is married and has a son. Anurag worked in a private bank in NCR as a sales manager earlier but quit it to work as a property dealer. Cops are investigating if his wife was aware of his criminal activities.
