Delhi: Man held for 500 robberies, 12 stolen vehicles seized
Delhi Police arrested a 34-year-old man yesterday for his involvement in around 500 robbery cases. The cops said that he evaded arrest for nine years but was finally caught from Mandawali on Ghazipur Road. 12 vehicles that he stole in the past few days were recovered. His MO was to steal vehicles parked from commercial areas and drive off.
He dismantled the vehicle and sold the metal scraps
It took the accused, Mohammad Imran, only seconds to unlock a vehicle using a master-key and start the ignition. When he stole more than one vehicle, he'd park one outside a metro station and drive the other back to Meerut, his hometown. He'd return the next day and take back the parked vehicle. He used to dismantle the vehicles and sell the metal parts.
'Never sold vehicles, worked alone, so could evade arrest'
Cops arrested Imran after they received a tip-off that he would be visiting Ghazipur on April 6 to carry out his operations. He could avoid getting caught for nine long years because he worked alone, had no accomplice who'd give his identity away and never sold the vehicles to dealers, says a police officer. Imran sold clothes as a part-time engagement and was illiterate.
'21 cases of automobile thefts worked out so far'
"With his arrest, 21 cases of automobile thefts have been worked out so far," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Omvir Singh, adding that Imran has confessed to the robberies. Other police stations where vehicle thefts were reported would be contacted as part of investigation.
