Delhi smog: All hopes on rains predicted on Nov 14-15
Light rains predicted on November 14 and 15 are expected to clear the smog in the national capital and bring relief to the people gasping for breath. The minimum temperature today was 13 degrees Celsius, one notch below the season's average while the maximum temperature was noted at 28.4 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels oscillated between 98 per cent and 51 per cent.
What has led to the abysmal conditions?
Air pollution in Delhi remains at high levels throughout the years, but is complicated further during the winters due to a combination of factors. For one, stubble burning in neighboring states and burning of biomass for heating raise smog levels in the capital. Bursting of crackers during Diwali also contribute. Slow winds this time are preventing dispersal of pollutants.
Meanwhile, odd-even scheme called-off
Delhi has been encountering thick smog for the last few days, urging authorities to impose emergency steps such as forbidding construction activities and brick kilns due to increased air pollution. The odd-even scheme, which was scheduled to begin on Monday, was however called-off by the Delhi government after the NGT ordered the withdrawal of exemptions given to women and two-wheelers under the scheme.
