Deploy guards, install CCTV to curb open drinking: Delhi govt
The Delhi government has directed liquor vends to deploy an adequate number of guards to curb open drinking near the outlets. In written directions, the Excise Department asked liquor vends that if any person is found consuming liquor around the vend, they should immediately contact local police station. It has also directed to install CCTV cameras that can capture footage within 50m. Here's more.
Consumption of liquor in a public place is punishable
According to the Excise Department's directions, liquor vends will exhibit prominently that consumption of liquor in a public place is punishable with fine and/or imprisonment as provided under Rule 65 of the Delhi Excise Rules, 2010.
The directions were issued after a review
"If any person is found consuming liquor around the vicinity of vend then they should immediately contact the concerned police station or inform to Control Room of Excise Department," Assistant Commissioner (Excise) JP Singh said. "Wherever required, an adequate number of guards must be deployed at the vend," Singh said. "Proper lighting arrangement should be maintained in and around the vend," Singh added.
Delhi government launched the drive against open drinking in 2016
While announcing a similar drive last month, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had said consumption of alcohol in the open, particularly near liquor vends and in vehicles, is not merely a safety hazard but a major problem for women safety in the national capital.
