Delhi: Convict escapes from custody, aides throw chilli-powder at cops
An alleged murder convict escaped from police custody on Monday, reportedly with the help of his accomplices who threw chilli powder in the eyes of the police personnel. They were accompanying the convict to a hospital in Central Delhi. The incident has led to the suspension of three policemen. The convict Sandeep alias Dhillu, was lodged in East Delhi's Mandoli jail. Here's more.
The convict is a suspected member of Neeraj Bawana gang
The convict, aged around 40 years, belonged to Haryana's Bahadurgarh and escaped from police custody along with his four associates who also opened fire on the police officers. As per reports, Sandeep is a suspected member of the Neeraj Bawana gang and has 14 other cases pending against him. However, it is unclear in which case he was lodged at the Mandoli jail.
Sandeep escaped while being escorted back to jail from hospital
Sandeep was taken to a dental hospital in Daryaganj for treatment on February 9 and was advised to visit again on February 19. A senior police official said that the incident happened when Sandeep was being escorted back to the jail by police officials. A group of unidentified bikers reached the spot and attacked the policemen by throwing chilli powder in their eyes.
Police are trying to nab Sandeep and aides
Delhi Armed Police' s officer TKS Singh said that the three policemen who accompanied the prisoner were all suspended. As Sandeep escaped on one of the bikes, the policemen tried to stop them by firing four rounds but he managed to flee from the spot. Police said a case has been registered and efforts to nab the convict and his associates are on.
